Africa’s deserts

Deserts cover a huge part of Africa, and some of its most magical nights are spent in them.

The Sahara

  • Morocco: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, or the wilder Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid.
  • Egypt: the White Desert and the Siwa Oasis.
  • Tunisia: Douz and the oases around Tozeur.
  • Algeria: Tassili n’Ajjer and the Hoggar, usually with a local agency.

The Namib

Sossusvlei’s red dunes, the Skeleton Coast and the coast at Swakopmund.

The Kalahari

The Central Kalahari and Kgalagadi parks, and Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans.

When to go and what to pack

Spring and autumn are best for the Sahara; the southern winter (May to September) for the Namib and Kalahari. Desert nights are cold: bring a warm layer, a scarf for sand, sunglasses and plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions
