The Big Five explained

The Big Five are lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo and rhino. The name came from hunters, for the animals most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today it is a photographer’s checklist.

The five

Where to see all five

South Africa’s Kruger and the private reserves next to it are the most reliable. Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater is another classic. Rhinos are the hardest part of the list in many parks.

Beyond the Big Five

Some guides talk about the Little Five (elephant shrew, ant lion, rhino beetle, buffalo weaver and leopard tortoise) and the Shy Five (aardvark, aardwolf, pangolin, porcupine and bat-eared fox). And the African wild dog is on every guide’s wish list.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see the Big Five in one place?

Kruger and its private reserves, Ngorongoro Crater and several reserves in South Africa, Zambia and Botswana.

Why is the hippo not in the Big Five?

The list came from hunters on foot, not from how dangerous animals are to people today.
