Africa with kids

Africa can be a life-changing family trip. A few rules make it much easier.

Choose family-friendly destinations

  • South Africa: malaria-free reserves, Cape Town’s beaches and penguins, the Garden Route.
  • Kenya and Tanzania: many camps have family tents and children’s programmes.
  • Mauritius: easy beach holidays.
  • Namibia: a self-drive road trip with Etosha’s waterholes.

Age limits to know

  • Gorilla trekking: usually 15 and over.
  • Chimpanzee tracking: often 12 or older.
  • Walking safaris: often 12 or 16, depending on the country.
  • Some camps: have minimum ages or require private vehicles for families.

Tips

  • Book a private vehicle so you can stop when the kids need a break.
  • Choose shorter drives and fewer moves.
  • Talk to a travel clinic about malaria; many families choose malaria-free areas with young children.
  • Bring binoculars for each child and a wildlife checklist.
